Baseball gets No. 1 ranking in 2010 preseason poll

The 2010 ABCA preseason baseball poll for Division III baseball has been released, with 2009 champion St. Thomas holding the top spot.

The Tommies will be led by an interim head coach when practices begin Feb. 1. After 15 seasons at UST, Dennis Denning has announced plans to retire.

The Tommies will return All-American pitcher Matt Schuld and most of its mound staff from its 41-13 team that won the MIAC championship for an unprecedented seventh consecutive season then won six elimination games at regionals and nationals to claim the Division III championship

St. Thomas is currently ranked in the top five nationally in football (fifth), men's basketball (second) and baseball (first). UST placed third nationally last May in men's track and field.

The Tommies also finished ranked 10th in volleyball, and is ranked in the top 25 in men's and women's golf. During 2009, UST was nationally ranked in men's and women's cross country, women's soccer, women's hockey and men's and women's track and field.
