St. Thomas rising junior outfielder Ben Podobinski made his Northwoods League debut Thursday night and reached base in both plate appearances.
Podobinski was signed by the Mankato MoonDogs for the last two weeks of the season. In Thursday’s 7-1 win over Green Bay, Podobinski contributed a single and was hit by pitch and scored a run for Mankato.
Podobinski made second-team All-Midwest Region this season in helping the Tommies repeat as MIAC champs and post another 30-plus win season. He led UST in batting (.422), runs (48), hits (62) and stolen bases (26). He had no errors in 85 chances in the outfield and threw out two runners on the bases from center field. He has 119 hits, 88 runs and 42 steals in 85 career games with the Toms.
While the 16-team Northwoods League rosters consist mostly of Division I and II scholarship players, nine different Tommies have competed there during the last two summers alone: Podobinski and fellow outfielders Ryan Gerber and Tim Kuzniar; catcher J.D. Dorgan; and pitchers Mark Behounek, Steve Maher, Dylan Thomas, Colin Wendinger and Tommy Danczyk. Another Tommie, pitcher Eric Veglahn, turned down a chance to join the LaCrosse team this season to concentrate on his final season of American Legion.
