Baseball gets No. 1 preseason ranking by D3Baseball.com

The 2010 D3baseball.com national poll has been released, with 2009 champion St. Thomas holding the top spot. UST received 17 first-place votes, while second-ranked Wooster claimed six-first-place votes.

Three teams on the Tommies' schedule are in the preseason top 25 -- Carthage is ranked eighth; St. Scholastica is ranked No. 22; and St. Olaf is ranked No. 25.

The Tommies will be led by interim head coach Chris Olean when practices begin next Monday. After 15 seasons at UST, Dennis Denning announced plans to retire.

The Tommies will return All-American pitcher Matt Schuld and most of its mound staff from its 41-13 team that won the MIAC championship for an unprecedented seventh consecutive season then won six elimination games at regionals and nationals to claim the Division III championship. Nineteen of the top 25 players from last season are expected to return.

UST and Wooster also rank 1-2 in the 2010 preseason poll by the ABCA:
