Darren Nelson returned to his alma mater in 2009 as a football assistant for the second time in his career, this time with Coach Caruso's staff. Nelson previously worked three seasons at UST from 2004-2006 and coached All-MIAC performers Steve Groth, Jeremy Krentz, Justin Nwadiashi and Jeffrey Hilliard. St. Thomas' pass defense finished first, second and first in the MIAC each season. He spent the last two seasons at Bemidji State, where he coached cornerbacks, including Cactus Bowl invitee and two-time all-conference CB Terrell Phelps.
   
His coaching career began in 2000 when he returned to the site of his prep career at the Academy of the Holy Angels. He served as an assistant coach for the Stars¹ varsity team for three seasons on teams that won two conference and one section title. He also was the defensive coordinator in his final two seasons.
   
He¹s also been a volunteer baseball coach for the Minneapolis Park Board since 2004. 
   
As a student-athlete, Nelson was a second-team All-MIAC selection with the Tommies in 1999 and graduated in 2000 with degrees in both Criminal Justice and Psychology.
