Fritz Waldvogel and his teammates found themselves in an unusual spot Sunday -- trailing in the second half. But a 22-0 game-ending run capped by an 8-yard Waldvogel TD catch lifted his Schwabisch Hall Unicorns to a 48-37 victory over the Marburg Mercenaries in the German Football League.
The first-place Unicorns (10-1) ran their winning streak to 10. Waldvogel, a two-time Tommie All-America who graduated from UST last May, had TD catches of 50, 49 and 8 yards and now has nine TDs in three August games.
Since Waldvogel joined the squad in late May, the Unicorns are 9-0 and averaging 56 ppg in their bid to repeat as champions of the 16-team GFL.
The previous weekend, Waldvogel had back-to-back first-quarter touchdowns on punt returns to lead a 42-16 win over the Saarland Hurricanes.
Waldvogel has collected 27 touchdowns in nine games. He leads the GFL in scoring per game, all-purpose yards per game and reception yards per game.
Schwabisch Hall has three games left before the playoffs begin Sept. 22. The GFL championship game is set for Oct. 13.
Over his last six seasons dating back to his senior year at St. Thomas Academy, Waldvogel has scored 18 touchdowns off punt and kickoff returns.
