Sophomore Ben Wartman rushed for a career-best 196 yards and two TDs and freshman WR Fritz Waldvogel had 12 catches for 180 yards to lead the visiting Tommies to a 30-22 victory at Gustavus in Saturday's MIAC football action in St. Peter.
The Tommies (3-1 overall, 2-1 MIAC) had just one turnover, held the Gusties to only 22 rushing yards, and broke to a 16-0 halftime lead.
UST, which never trailed, has already surpassed its 2007 win total and beat the Gusties for the fourth time in the last five meetings. St. Thomas surrendured long TD passes of 99 and 50 yards but still outgained Gustavus 440-335, with a balance of 239 yards on the ground and 201 in the air.
Senior QB David Sauer completed 15-of-26 passes for 200 yards and one TD. Sauer now has 44 career TD passes and 5,168 yards in the air.
Tommy Becker had 10 tackles for the Tommie defense, which recorded three sacks. Eric Taylor had a 26-yard field goal and was 3-of-4 in PAT kicks.
The Tommies play next Saturday at MIAC co-leader Concordia-Moorhead.
