St. Thomas running back and kick returner Mikkel Haugen (SR-Kenyon/Kenyon-Wanamingo) was among 22 players nationally -- and just two Division III players -- named to the 2008 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
Haugen is among 11 players honored from Division II and III and NAIA teams for
exceptional campus and community service. Eleven players also were chosen from the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) series, formerly known as Division IA.
Haugen's selection gives UST an honoree for a record 11 consecutive seasons. St. Thomas' 11 all-time selections ties Nebraska and Georgia for tops on the national list.
Minnesota was the state with the most honorees (three). Northern Illinois' Matt Simon of Farmington and St. Cloud State's Ricky Horn of Melrose were the other Minnesotans selected.
Haugen, a Geography major with 3.68 gpa, is a two-time Academic All-MIAC honoree. He's been slowed by injuries thus far in 2008, but last year averaged 21.8 yards on nine kick returns, rushed six times for 13 yards, had one catch for five yards. In 2006, he averaged 22.0 yards on nine kick returns. At Kenyon-Wanamingo High, he was class president and Academic All-State; in football he was honorable mention all-state, 2X all-conference, and played in the Minnesota all-star game; and in track and field he was state qualifier and 2X all-conference as a sprinter. His brother, Anders was All-MIAC lineman at Gustavus, and his parents are Heidi and Harris Haugen.
Past Tommie Good Works honorees were Mark Warder (1998), Greg Kaiser (1999), Mike Westland (2000), Brian Brenberg (2001), Andrew Hilliard (2002), John Kaiser (2003), Ben Kessler (2005), P.J. Theisen (2006) and Pat Sommerstad (2007).
