In the first-ever spring football game at the University of St Thomas, nobody wanted to lose. Literally. Regulation was not enough to determine a winner in Sunday's two-hour intersquad scrimmage at Palmer Field that included 100 plays and about 90 players in action.
After regulation play, the score was tied 37-37. Coach Glenn Caruso's Tommies needed an overtime session to put the White team ahead.
“It's an extremely rare ocurrance to hold a Division III Spring Football game, and I could not be prouder of the work the guys did on this field today, it’s everything you would want, a beautiful day, a crowd full of parents, alums, seminarians and almost all of the 40 incoming recruits,” Coach Caruso said.
“On offense, I thought that we showed that we can establish a legitimate run game, and defensively, I love the way we pressured the QB and created turnovers. At the end, it was the special teams that won with two very well kicked field goals. It was really as balanced a spring game as I’ve ever been around.”
The team will leave for Canada this weekend to play the Manitoba Majors All Star Team at the CFL’s Blue Bombers Stadium.
“This has been an amazing spring," Coach Caruso said. "I've seen 90 guys grow together in ways that not many college teams have the opportunity to do during the spring. I know that the effort and energy these men have exerted in the past month will pay dividends come the fall.”
