
St. Thomas running back Ben Wartman (SO-Prior Lake) Tuesday was named MIAC Offensive Player of the Week.
Wartman rushed for a career-high 196 yards on 27 carries with two touchdowns to lead the Tommies to a 30-22 victory at Gustavus. Wartman's 32-yard touchdown run in the first quarter put UST ahead 6-0 and set the tone. His 60-yard run in the final 3:00 of the first half led to a short TD that put UST ahead 16-0 at halftime. Wartman's rushes moved the chains nine times with first downs on the day to help UST post a 39:28 total in time of possession. Wartman also recovered a fumbled punt return by the Gusties.
Wartman, a converted receiver, ranks in the top two of MIAC running backs in running yards, yards per rush and touchdowns. He has complied 308 rushing yards in his last six quarters.
St. Thomas takes a 3-1 record into Saturday's game at Concordia and under first-year head coach Glenn Caruso, the Tommies have already surpassed the 2007 win total.
