Kaiser sharp as Toms move into first-place tie

Senior QB Greg Kaiser completed 16-of-22 passes for 279 yards and had one of his team's four rushing TDs on the day as host St. Thomas (4-2 overall, 4-1 MIAC) moved into a four-way tie for first place in the MIAC with a 27-6 win over Carleton (2-4, 1-4) Saturday at O'Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul. The Toms ran their win streak to three and beat Carleton for the seventh time in a row.

UST running backs Brent Nelson, Marcus Ludtke and Jake Barkley also had short TD runs. Kaiser capped a 95-yard first-quarter scoring drive with a six-yard TD run. Kaiser was held without a TD pass for just the second time in 25 career starts, but he did throw a two-point PAT pass to his brother Andy Kaiser in the third period.

Kaiser moved into second place in UST career passing and now has 5,766 yards. He moved into No. 17 on the Minnesota collegiate list for career passing yards and needs 893 yards to ereach No. 10 on the list. Kaiser has compled 61.3% of his passes, third best on the Minnesota collegiate list.

UST outgained Carleton 456-182 yards. A turning point came late in the second quarter after Carleton had pulled within 13-6. Greg Kaiser hit Justin Hall for a 17-yard gain on third-and-16 to keep a drive alive. UST scored three plays later and took a 19-7 lead with 43 seconds left in the first half.

Ludtke rushed 31 times for 96 yards, and Hall had five catches for 122 yards to lead the Tommies. Defensively, UST senior linebacker Blane Tetreault had his fourth interception of the season. Scott Solinger had an interception, a fourth-down sack for minus 14 yards, and a team-high eight tackles. Andy Kaiser had two sacks and five other tackles, plus a break-up.

The Knights recorded seven sacks and got a big day from Erik Miller with nine catches for 123 yards. Carleton QB Jon Groteboer completed 14-of-29 for 179 yards, including a 22-yard TD to Dan Reider. Andy Quist also had a wind-aided 82-yard punt for the Knights.
