2000 Football Season Milestones:
.It's the 75th season for Bemidji State and MSU, Mankato
.It's the 40th anniversary of the U of M Gophers' 1960 Rose Bowl team that was voted national champion (coached by Murray Warmath)
.It's the 60th anniversary of U of M Gophers' 1940 national champion team (coached by Bernie Bierman)
.It's the 20th anniversary of Minnesota-Duluth's only unbeaten, untied football team in its 67-year history (10-0-0 in 1980).
.Carleton and St. Thomas will play their school's 800th football games. Carleton's 800th will be Sept. 23 when it hosts St. Thomas. The Tommies host Macalester in their 800th game Oct. 21.
.Gustavus, St. John's, MSU, Moorhead all will play their 700th games.
.The 2000 Macalester vs. Hamline game Nov. 3 in the Metrodome is the 101st all-time meeting --Minnesota's oldest intrastate athletic rivalry.
.It's the 99th anniversary of the first St. John's-St. Thomas football meeting, played 1901 on Thanksgiving Day at St. Paul's Lexington Park. That game was won by the Johnnies over a UST club team, 16-0. (The 100th anniversary will be
celebrated during the schools' 2001 meeting in Collegeville).
.It's the 70th anniversary of the first night football game in Twin Cities history (Sept. 26, 1930, River Falls Teachers College at St. Thomas).
.It's the 70th time the St. Olaf-Carleton winner receives the Goat Trophy
.It's the 76th meeting between crosstown rivals MSU, Moorhead and Concordia-Moorhead, now dubbed the Power Bowl.
.John Gagliardi, college football's winningest active coach who needs 44 wins to catch Eddie Robinson as No. 1 in history, starts his 52nd season in coaching (48th at St. John's) with 364 career victories. He's on pace to coach his 500th game in 2001. The Johnnies have had 32 consecutive seasons without a losing record.
