NFL's Ravens cut ex-Tommie Ryan Collins
August 27, 2000
Former St. Thomas All-American tight end Ryan Collins was among a group of players cut Saturday by the Baltimore Ravens as NFL teams reduce rosters to the final 53 for the Sept. 3 openers.
Collins, who started two games for the Ravens last December, caught a 4-yard TD pass in Friday's exhibition victory over the New York Giants and had six receptions in four preseason games. But the Ravens kept free-agent rookie John Jones, an athletic pleyer who's on several special teams, as the No. 3 tight end.
The Ravens' off-season acqusitions of All-Pro tight ends Shannon Sharpe and Ben Coates had as much to do with Collins' release as anything.
Collins, who also is a deep snapper, is now free to sign with any other NFL team.
