Barkley sharp again as Toms top Carleton
For the second week in a row, UST sophomore halfback Jake Barkley scored three TDs and led a strong Tommie rushing game in a 36-13 victory over Carleton. The Toms, who led just 13-7 at halftime, pulled away in the second half to improve to 2-0 in the MIAC and 2-1 overall.
Barkley, who ran for 272 yards last week in the win over Concordia, rushed 26 times for 196 yards Saturday and now is averaging 177 ypg. Soph QB Alex Jadin threw three TD passes -- and 8-yarder to Andrew Hilliard, a 32-yearder to Barkley and a 10-yarder to Brian Brenberg. Barkley also ran for TDs of 46 and 32 yards. The Toms gained 413 yards of offense and held Carleton to 29 yards rushing and 214 total yards. The Toms' defense also had six sacks, a safety, a blocked punt and two interceptions.
With the Toms leading 13-7, UST freshman punter Kyle Davenport had a third-period punt downed at the Carleton 2-yard-line. On the next play, UST's Aaron Johnson pressured the Carleton QB into a grounding call in the end zone for a safety. That started a 16-0 run that broke open the game. Johnson finished with three sacks, and Joe Fritze intercepted his second pass of the season.
The Toms host St. John's next Saturday (1 p.m., O'Shaughnessy Stadium) in a game to be televised live by Media One cable in St. Paul and some suburbs. The Toms, Johnnies and Bethel share the MIAC lead at 2-0.
