Jake Barkley surpasses 3,000 career rushing yards
November 7, 2001
St. Thomas running back Jake Barkley (JR-Plymouth/Robbinsdale Armstrong) became the ninth player in MIAC history to surpass 3,000 career rushing yards when he gained 155 yards on 19 carries in Saturday's 35-6 win over Hamline.
Barkley now has rushed for 1,225 yards in eight games in 2001 and 3,066 yards in three seasons. With at least one game left in 2001 plus the 2002 season, Barkley needs 549 yards to become UST's career leader and 760 yards to become the conference's all-time leader. He has surpassed 100 yards in 13 of his last 16 games and has run for 100-plus yards against all nine MIAC foes at least once during his career. In his last two seasons, he's averaging 150 ypg rushing.
St. Olaf's Ole Gunderson gained 4,090 yards (1969-71), although his school competed in the Midwest Conference during those years. The recognized MIAC career rushing leader is Tim Schmitz of St. John's (1974-77) with 3,933 yards.
