Jake Barkley zeroes in on MIAC rushing record

St. Thomas RB Jake Barkley (SR-Plymouth/Robbinsdale Armstrong) is closing in on both the Tommies' career and the MIAC career rushing records.

In Saturday's 41-7 win at Hamline, Barkley rushed 30 times for 114 yards, including touchdown runs of 2, 27 and 11 yards. Barkley, who has 10 season touchdowns and 31 career TDs, has 3,649 career rushing yards and needs 76 to pass Gary Trettel and become the Toms' career rushing leader.

Barkley also needs 285 yards to pass St. John's Tim Schmitz (1974-77), 3,933 yards) and become the all-time MIAC leader.

Barkley surpassed 100 yards in rushing in 17 of his 22 career starts and 18 times overall.

(St. Olaf's Ole Gunderson gained 4,090 rushing yards from 1969-71 but it came when the Oles were a member of the Midwest Conference).

The Tommies host UW-Stout Saturday in non-conference play (1 p.m.) and play at St. Olaf Oct. 5 (1 p.m.).
