December 19, 2005

Andrew Ubbelohde was named a captain for Team USA at the Dec. 17 Aztec Bowl

St. Thomas linebacker Andrew Ubbelohde (SR-Red Wing) was named first-team All-American by d3football.com. The honor team was announced Saturday.

Ubbelohde capped a tremendous career with several significant honors. He also was named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American; and was named to the AFCA's Aztec Bowl and was one of four captains on that 47-man Division III all-star team, and then had an interception and five tackles in the Aztec victory over Mexico.

A Criminal Justice major with a 3.81 gpa and a Marine ROTC member, Ubbelohde is the first Tommie football player to make first team All-American and Academic All-American since Mark Dienhart in 1974. He's also the only first-team d3football All-American to also make CoSIDA Academic All-American and play on the Division III all-star team in the Dec. 17 Aztec Bowl.

In addition, Ubbelohde was one of 11 ROTC midshipmen selected -- from a nationwide pool of more than 4,500 -- to receive an Olmsted overseas travel grant. That program enhances the development of future military leaders by sending young officers and officer candidates to study in foreign cultures. As part of the program, Ubbelohde will travel to India in January.

Four other MIAC players were among the 100 honored on the d3football All-America list. St. John's DE Damien Dumonceaux was named National Defensive Player of the Year and joined Ubbelohde on the first team. Bethel RB Phil Porta made second-team All-American. Augsburg had a third-team honoree in LB Mike Mattson and an honorable mention honoree in punter Nick Schlieman.

Ubbelohde broke the UST single-game and season records for tackles in 2005. He made first-team All-MIAC for the third year in a row -- one of just four conference players to achieve that in 2003, 2004 and 2005. He also made second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America. He ended the regular season third in the nation in tackles per game with 14.9; had a school-record 21 tackles vs. St. John's in his final college game; broke a UST season tackles record with 133 in nine games; and closed his career with 318 tackles, second-most in Tommie history. In 24 starts since 2003, he had 307 tackles, 10 sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and one recovered fumble. He was named MIAC Defensive Player of the Week three times in his career.
