Junior guard Tyler Nicolai scored 17 points and the No. 9-ranked Tommies shot 56% from the field in Wednesday night's 71-63 MIAC men's basketball win at Concordia-Moorhead.
St. Thomas (14-2 overall, 10-1 MIAC) moved back into sole possession of the MIAC lead as Gustavus lost 60-55 at home to seventh-place Carleton. The Toms improved to 6-1 in January in a 19-day stretch.
John Fraase had 19 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Cobbers (8-8, 4-7). Concordia trailed 35-29 at halftime and got as close as three points midway throuygh the second half. But UST used a 9-2 run to rebuild the margin to 10 points, and the Cobs never got closer than six down the stretch.
UST received 65 of its 71 points from guards/small forwards and had only 10 turnovers. Alex Healy scored 15 points and added five assists; Joe Scott and Noah Kaiser each scored 10 points; and Tommy Hannon had six rebounds.
The Toms play Saturday at St. Olaf (3 p.m.).
