MBB rises; UST's third ranked in top-10

December 17, 2013

St. Thomas is the lone NCAA institution this week to have both its men’s and women’s basketball plus its men’s hockey teams ranked in the top 10 of national polls.

All three teams have just one loss, all incurred on Nov. 15. Since that night, those Tommie teams have combined to post a 17-0-2 record.

Men’s basketball (6-1) is riding a six-game winning streak and climbed five spots to No. 7 in this week’s top 25 poll. Coach John Tauer’s team plays Saturday at No. 1-ranked UW-Stevens Point. UST is 3-0 in the conference and is one-half game behind leader Gustavus.

Women’s basketball has compiled a seven-game winning streak and rose one spot to No. 9 in the latest top 25 rankings. Coach Ruth Sinn’s squad is off until Jan. 4 but will go into January at 5-0 in the MIAC, one-half game ahead of second-place Bethel.

Men’s hockey (8-1-2) is coming off a 3-0 shutout of No. 9-ranked St. Scholastica and has a six-game unbeaten streak. UST remains at No. 6 in the latest top-15 poll by U.S. College Hockey Online. The Tommies are off until Jan. 4 when they play on the road against No. 3-ranked St. Norbert.
