COLLEGEVILLE – Senior center Tommy Hannon scored a season-high 23 points and was joined in double figures by three teammates as red-hot St. Thomas cruised to a 93-68 win over St. John’s on Saturday.
The Tommies (23-1, 18-1 MIAC) won their seventh game in a row and handed St. John’s (10-13, 9-9) its third straight loss. UST shot 64 percent from the field (35 of 55) and 76 percent from the free-throw line (16 of 21).
Hannon scored 14 points in the second half, including eight in a row late in the game, and finished 10 of 13 from the field. Senior guard Will DeBerg had 16 points on five of eight shooting from 3-point range plus a free throw after one trey; junior forward Zach Riedeman had 15, all in the first half; and freshman Taylor Montero added 10 points.
St. Thomas jumped to a 6-0 lead on two field goals and two free throws by Riedeman. St. John’s closed to within 16-15 but runs of 8-0 and 7-0 boosted the Tommies’ lead to 33-19, and they went into the locker room up 44-31 on a DeBerg three-pointer at the buzzer. DeBerg hit three straight three-point shots in a 1:49 span early in the second half to extend the lead to 20 points.
The Tommies held Seth Marx, St. John’s leading scorer, to seven points on two of 11 shooting. Marx had scored 54 points and pulled down 26 rebounds in the Johnnies’ previous two games but didn’t score from the field against St. Thomas until seven minutes were left in the game.
