Augsburg escapes St. Thomas, 62-61, stays unbeaten in MIAC

Senior guard Travis Hinze scored a game-high 23 points and Augsburg outscored host St. Thomas 7-2 over the final 2:40 as the Auggies (7-3 overall, 6-0 MIAC) posted a 62-61 victory over the Tommies (7-3, 3-3) in MIAC men's basketball
Monday night in Schoenecker Arena.

The Auggies remained unbeaten in conference play and won for the seventh time in their last eight games. Augsburg survived 25 turnovers by sinking 16 of 20 at the foul line and making 64% from the field (14-of-22) in the second half. Tommy Chatman added 13 points and six rebounds and Matt Davis had nine points and 11 rebounds for the Auggies.

Mychal Brenden had 11 points and Mike Wrobel scored 10 for the Tommies, who dropped their second close game in a row.

An Augsburg charging call with :14 remaining gave the Toms a chance at a go-ahead basket. But UST junior guard Mark Buri, who finished with 20 points, saw his potential game-winning 3-point shot with :05 to play roll off the rim.

Augsburg trailed by as much as 12 in the first half, but Chatman scored seven points to fuel a 14-4 run over the final 4:55 of the half to pull within 27-25 at halftime.

The Toms took a 59-55 lead on Kevin Fitzgerald's jump shot with 3:00 to go. But Davis made a tip-in and later made one free throw, and Chatman sank two more free throws with 2:14 left to give the Auggies a 60-59 lead. Chatman's 12-foot jumper with 1:41 left made it 62-59, but Buri answered with a basket with 1:23 to play to cut the lead to 62-61.
