Former UST basketball captain still has game

March 24, 2004
Former St. Thomas men's basketball co-captain David Devine can still shoot the ball in the clutch -- four years after graduation.

Devine, a 1996 graduate of Cretin-Derham Hall and a 2000 graduate of St. Thomas, sank a three-quarter court shot at a halftime promotion at a Jan. 30 high school basketball game in suburban Chicago.

Devine, who now works in Chicago, was picked out of the crowd to try a long shot for a halftime promotion at the New Trier High School boys' game vs. Glenbrook South. Devine won a $1,000 pizza gift certificate from Lou Malnati Pizzeria. The New Trier head coach, Rck Malnati, is co-owner of the pizza chain.

Devine used a two-hand overhand toss, similar to a soccer throw-in, for his long basket. A solid defender and rebounder, Devine made only one three-point basket in his varsity days at St. Thomas.

Devine had 101 career points in three seasons on the varsity. He played in 23 games as a senior on the Toms' MIAC championship team, with a high of 11 points vs. St. Olaf.

Devine, whose uncle is former Notre Dame football coach Dan Devine, worked two years as a teacher in Los Angeles inner-city schools before taking a job in the finance field in Chicago.
