Men's Basketball loses 91-50 in exhibition to D-I Minnesota

November 6, 2004
The host Minnesota Gophers used strength and quickness to create several big runs and cruise to a 91-50 victory over St. Thomas Saturday in a season-opening exhibition men's basketball game at Williams Arena.

The Gophers shot 51% on the game, made eight 3-pointers and outrebounded the Tommies 45-34. Jeff Hagen had 17 points and seven rebounds in just 17 minutes.

The Toms trailed 44-24 at halftime, in part due to a16-1 edge in Gopher points at the foul line.

Tommie sophomore forward Isaac Rosefelt, a transfer from Bowling Green, scored four inside baskets as the Toms stayed within 10-8 with 15:00 left in the first half. But Rosefelt got into foul trouble and sat out, in his absence Minnesota used an 18-2 run to quickly take control.

Rosefelt finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Sean Sweeney had 10 of his 12 points in the second half and added four steals and three assists. Soph guard Bryan Schnetter, a transfer from UW-Superior, had seven points, and junior forward Danny Peterson had seven points and seven rebounds. Junior center Nate Worrell had five rebounds and soph Dan McKeown added six rebounds.

UST played without starting forward Joey Shimek.

Coach Steve Fritz' team opens its season Nov. 20 at Concordia of California. UST's MIAC opener is at home Dec. 4 vs. Macalester.
