The St. Thomas men's cross country team put three runners in the top 15 and had an excellent 43-second
split among its first five as it placed third of 22 teams at Saturday's SUNY-Albany Invitational. The competition involved mostly Division I and II scholarship programs.
Marist took first with 23 points followed by D-III's Brandeis (91), St. Thomas (113), Colgate (166), Albany (190) and D-III's Middlebury (196).
The first five Tommies all had personal-best times for 8,000 meters (4.97 miles) in cross country -- senior Matt Boumeester placed 10th in 25:23; freshman Ben Sathre was 12th in 25:25; senior Brian Sames took 15th in 25:31; junior Mike Connell was 32nd in 25:53; and senior Rorak Hooten was 48th in 26:06. Freshman Nick Nygaard took 84th in 26:41 and freshman Tyler Iverson was 90th in 26:44.
The Tommies will compete next Nov. 1 at the MIAC Championships at St. Paul's Como Golf Course.
