The MIAC on Monday named Tommie sophomore Keaton Wendroth as its Athlete of the Week in men's cross country.
Wendroth contibuted to St. Thomas' track and field success in the middle distance events in 2011 and 2012 but has been off the cross country radar until this fall. Last spring in track and field, Wendroth ran 3:57.9 in the 1,500 and 15:08 in the 5,000, and placed sixth outdoors at the conference meet.
The Rochester Mayo High graduate is having a breakout season in 2012. He didn't run CC as a Tommie freshman, then missed 2011 with an injury. But Wendroth has won all three races thus far in 2012 to lead St. Thomas.
Friday in Colfax, Wis., he clocked 25:32.1 and outran all 88 conference runners (St. Olaf, St. John's, Hamline, UST) and more than 300 total runners with a fourth-place individual finish at the Blugold Invite. He took advantage of a fast course and good competition and cut 1:19 off his previous 8,000-meter best in his young college career. St. Thomas mput six runners in the top 75 and placed seventh out of 17 teams.
Earlier this fall, Wendroth ran 19:34 for 6,000 meters at the St. Kate's campus on Aug. 31, and clocked 26:51 for 8,000 and took first place at the Sept. 8 Crown Invite.
St. Thomas runs Oct. 6 at the St. Kate's Invite.
