May 19, 2008

St. Thomas freshman golfer Grant Shafranski of Stevens Point, Wis., received elite awards on the regional and conference level after the conclusion of his 2007-08 fall and spring seasons.

Shafranski was chosen Central Region Freshman of the Year and made the national six-man All-Freshman team as chosen by the Golf Coaches Association of America. He also was honored as MIAC Freshman of the Year.

He played in 11 tournaments (22 rounds) for the Tommies in 2007-08 and finished the year with a 79.13 scoring average, including a 76.30 average in the spring. Shafranski finished tied for 27th at the MIAC Championships last October. He was also co-medalist at the St. John's Spring Invite and finished second by a shot at the St. Olaf Invite.

Chase Rogers of Huntingdon has been honored as the Phil Mickelson Award as the most outstanding freshman in Division III men’s golf. Joining Rogers and Shafranski on the All-Freshman Team are Pacific’s Max Bonk, Brad Cieslinski of Washington & Jefferson, Mount Union’s Lucas Murray and Bradley Roche of Hamilton.

Rogers – the All-Freshman Team’s selection from the South Region – finished in the top 10 six times this season, including two runner-up finishes. Bonk represented the West, Cieslinski the Mid-Atlantic, Murray the Great Lakes, Roche the Northeast, and Shafranski the Central.
