Men's Golf fourth of 17 at Augsburg event

St. Thomas senior Ben Jensen and sophomore Grant Shafranski had top-10 finishes in a field of 92 players to lead the Tommie teams to fourth and ninth place out of 17 squads at the two-day Augsburg Men's Golf Invitational, which concluded Sunday in Hutchinson. It was the opening fall meet for St. Thomas in an event that featured all MIAV men's golf teams except St. John's and Concordia.

Bethel (597) posted a 14-stroke victory over runner-up Gustavus (611). UW-Stout (614), St. Thomas (618), Augsburg (621), Edgewood (623), St. Olaf (629), Wartburg (632) and UST's second team (634) rounded out the top nine teams. UST's 316 round Sunday was the second best of the day.

Jensen shot 68-82/150 to share fifth place after having the low round on Saturday. Shafranski shot 78/73-151 to tie for eighth and share the best score of the event on Sunday.

Delaney Metcalf shot 78-80/158 to share 28th. Sean Barrett shot 78-81/156 to share 30th. Zach Barnum shot 78-83/161 to tie for 40th. For the St. Thomas No. 2 team, Bill Mullvahil shot 81-79/160 to share 30th; Brandon Engebos shot 78-82/160 and Jim Stafford 76-84/160 to both share 34th; John Baggenstoss shot 79-82/161 and Alex Grausnick shot 75-86/161 to each tie for 40th. Chris Sall shot 76-87/163 and Cutter Tyllia shot 83-88/171.

UST will compete next weekend at the St. John's Fall Invite.

Saturday story

St. Thomas senior Ben Jensen shot a 68 on Saturday and leads a field of 100 players at the halfway point of the Augsburg Men's Golf Invitational in Hutchinson.

The Tommie No. 1 team sits in fifth place, 13 shots out of first place. The tournanent wraps up Sunday with 18 holes.

Bethel and UW-Stout share the lead at 289 followed in the top eight by Gustavus (294), Edgewood (Wis.) 297, UST (302), Augsburg (303), Wartburg (303) and St. Olaf (307). Concordia and St. John's are the lone MIAC men's golf teams not entered.

Jensen was one of three players to break 70 and has a one-stroke lead on A.J. Olson of Gustavus and Mason Swenson of Bethel.
