The St. Thomas men's golf team put three players in the top 15 and scored a one-stroke victory in the 18-team Wartburg Invitational. The two-day 36-hole tournament concluded Saturday.
It was the first time since April 2000 that St. Thomas' won a team championship of a multi-team men's golf event (involving six or more schools).
Sean Barrett (73-76) and Chris Sall (73-76) each shot 149s to end in a six-way tie for ninth, and Ben Jensen (76-74) was one stroke back at 150 to tie for 15th. Bill Mulvahill (74-80) shot 74 on Friday and Grant Shafranski (81-75) shot 75 on Saturday to let the unranked Tommies pull out the team title.
Luther's No. 1 team and Nebraska Wesleyan tied for second at 598. Wartburg and Gustavus shared fourth at 599.
The Toms are scheduled to play twice this week -- Thursday in the UW-Eau Claire event and Friday in the UW-Stout tourney.
