Jack Walsh scored midway through period two and it stood as the game's only goal as fourth-seed Gustavus took a 1-0 win over top-seed St. Thomas in MIAC men's hockey playoff action Saturday night in Mednota Heights.
Tyler Venne stopped all 24 shots he faced for Gustavus (17-7-3), which has won eight in a row and is 10-1-2 since the holidays. Tyler Lapic and Corey Leivermann were credited with assists on the game's lone goal.
Drew Fielding stopped 22 of 23 shots in the season-ending loss for the Tommies (13-11-2). Fielding allowed just one goals in his last 215 minutes in goal in parts of four games.
St. Thomas allowed just 47 goals in 26 games. UST was 11-0 this season when it scored three or more goals but just 2-11-2 when it scored two or less.
Gustavus killed of 85 seconds of a 5-on-3 penalty midway through the third period, and held off UST on 55 seconds of extra attacker in the final minute. The Gusties, who edged St. Olaf 3-2 on Friday night, killed off all three power plays for the second night in a row.
Gustavus advances to the playoff finals on March 2 to play at second-seed St. John's, a 5-1 home winner over Concordia-Moorhead.
