Hockey NCAA Title Game: UST loses 2-1 to Norwich
March 18, 2000
Norwich won the NCAA Division III men's hockey championship Saturday night with a 2-1 win over St. Thomas in Superior, Wis. Norwich ended 29-2-1 while UST ended 27-4-2.
UST goalie Brad Moore stopped 27 of 29 shots in Saturday's loss. Moore allowed just four goals in 219 minutes of four NCAA games.
Andy Disch's power-play goal from Steve Aronson and Brian Bolf at 2:51 into the third period erased a 1-0 Norwich lead. But Norwich answered with the eventual game-winning goal as Marc Bellemare's shot through traffic hit Moore and rolled into the net at 10:53 for the gamewinner. Moore left for a sixth attacker in the final minute but UST could not get the equalizer.
After a scoreless first period, Norwich scored a power-play goal four minutes into the second for the only tally of the game thus far. UST was outshot 23-20 in the first 40 minutes, although the Toms killed off seven penalties in that stretch.
The Toms were the first MIAC team to reach the championship game in the 16-year history of NCAA Division III hockey.
