Men's Hockey wins 5-2, claims MIAC title

February 24, 2006
Senior Colin Greenlees scored twice in a 61-second span of period one and host St. Thomas (15-8-1 overall, 12-2-1 MIAC) clinched the MIAC men's hockey regular-season title with Friday's 5-2 victory over Hamline (4-16-3, 3-9-2) in Mendota Heights.

It was the Tommies' 13th conference championship under 19-year head coach Terry Skrypek, and UST's 16th title in the last 24 seasons.

The Toms also secured the top-seed for next week's five-team conference playoffs and will host the No. 4/5 winner Thursday at 8 p.m.

Senior Dan Krmpotich had a goal and two assists and sophomore Matt Kaiser had a goal and an assist for the Toms, who ran their MIAC home-ice winning streak to 12 games. Andy Panchenko and Brandon Wilcox each scored two assists. Junior Treye Kettwick stopped 19 of 21 shots in goal.

UST trailed 1-0 before Greenlees scored at 9:47 and again at 10:48 of the first period.

Kaiser's goal 1:20 into period two broke a 2-2 tie.

Freshmen Dustin Fulton and Jim Erickson scored first-period goals for the Pipers.

The teams play again Saturday (7 p.m.) at St. Paul Academy's Drake Arena.
