St. Thomas forwards Mike Hutton, Elliot Amundon and Angel Riera and defender Redi Moser-Bleil were among 20 players named Thursday to the All-MIAC first team for men's soccer. Two other Tommies were among 17 who made honorable mention all-conference.
Hutton (SO-Burnsville/Apple Valley), was a repeat honoree. He was one of two freshmen on the 20-man MIAC first team last year. He's played in 32 career games and had 22 goals and 10 assists. He was named MIAC Player of the Week in October after scoring two goals and two assists in a 4-0 win over nationally-ranked St. Olaf. UST is 12-5-2 in MIAC play when he's been in uniform, and 17-2 overall when he's scored a point.
St. Thomas tied for fourth in the conference and reached the MIAC playoffs in a 10-6-2 finish.
Moser-Bleil (JR-Burnsville/Holy Angels) also was a repeat first-team pick. He had only one goal in 2008, but it was the game winner in overtime to beat St. John's. In 2009, his four goals included one each in a 3-2 win vs. the Johnnies and in a 2-1 win over Minnesota-Morris. In 56 career games he has five goals and an assist, and the Tommies are 5-0 when he's scored a goal.
Amundson (JR-Minneapolis/Trinity) is also on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration with a 3.92 gpa in Accounting. He had eight goals and four assists for 20 points this season, including eight goals in his last 14 games. Amundson had a goal and an assist in the Oct. 31 7-0 win over St. Mary's that secured a conference playoff berth. He scored the game-winning goal on the road in the second OT to beat 15th-ranked Augsburg, and scored a winning goal in the 84th minute at St. John's. He also assisted on a game-winning goal in OT in 2008 to beat St. John's, and assisted on game-winning goal in second half of a 1-0 win over Northwestern in September. The Tommies went 11-1 in the last two seasons when he's scored a goal or an assist, and he has nine goals and six assists in his last two seasons.
Riera (SO-Minneapolis/DeLaSalle), who had just one assist in 17 games as a freshman, had four goals and three assists this season. He scored the game-winning goal in overtime as UST beat Gustavus for the first time this decade, and assisted on the overtime goal that beat nationally-ranked Augsburg. UST was 4-0 when he scored a goal.
Defender Colin White (JR-New Hope/Robbinsdale Armstrong) and goalie Carlos Castelan (SR-St. Paul/Cretin-Derham Hall) were named honorable mention All-MIAC. White, has played in 34 games in two seasons with the Tommies and has one assist; Castelan was 23-12-1 in 38 career games with an 0.95 GAA.
Amundson also was named to MIAC Sportsmanship team.
