Men's soccer tops St. Mary's 2-1

The St. Thomas men's soccer team won its second consecutive conference game as it topped visiting St. Mary's 2-1 in an MIAC game Saturday on the south campus field.

The Tommies closed the September portion of their schedule with a 2-1 MIAC record and a 7-2 overall mark. St. Mary's (5-3-1 overall, 2-2 MIAC). The Toms are now 7-1 in their last eight home games since they lost 2-1 to St. Mary's last season.

UST took a 1-0 lead on John Maschoff's unassisted goal off a penalty kick in the 34th minute. The Toms scored again in the last minute of the first half as Andy Kaasa connected on a cross pass from Tom Hart.

St. Mary's made it 2-1 in the 84th minute on Eric Brown's header from Brayton Grinnell.

Will Loepfe played all 90 minutes in goal for the Toms, who outshot the Cardinals 20-8.
