The winner plays in Saturday's finals vs. the winner between top-seed Carleton and fourth-seed St. Olaf. If Carleton wins it hosts Saturday's championship, but if St. Olaf wins the Gusties-Tommie winner will play host to the finals.

In the six head-to-head meetings this fall between the four playoff teams, one ended in tie and the other five games were decided by one goal.

The second-seeded Gusties (14-3-1) shared the regular-season championship with Carleton, while UST (11-4-3) is the third seed. Gustavus won the previous meeting just four days ago at St. Thomas, 1-0, on Mike Butterworth's goal 2:07 into sudden-death overtime. The Tommies played without key scorer Thomas Gjervold who was injured in practice the previous day.

It was the 14th shutout of the season for Gustavus, which hasn't allowed a goal to St. Thomas in the last six games. UST's last goal against the Gusties came in the first minute of the 2001 meeting. The teams tied 0-0 in 2004 but otherwise the Toms are 0-8-1 in the series since 1998.

The Tommies played without key scorer Thomas Gjervold who was injured in practice the previous day.
