Men, Women enjoy farewell meet in OSH pool

The final competition in the 70-year era of O'Shaughnessy Pool played out Friday night as Gustavus and St. Thomas swam a dual meet before an overflow crowd on the UST campus in St. Paul.

The Tommie men won seven of nine events and outscored the Gusties 49-26. The UST women won five of nine events and posted a 42-26 win. The teams competed in the distance of races common in 1940 when the facility opened.

"We really sent old O’Shaughnessy Natatorium out in style," said UST swimming coach Tom Hodgson. "We had a standing-room only crowd, that included probably 70 swimming and diving alumni, but we also celebrated the last home meet for our 14 seniors -- the largest graduating class in the history of the program.  

"The meet ended with about two minutes of sustained applause, and the kids didn’t want to leave. It was an incredibly special moment, and with all the incredible memories in this pool, it’s one I’ll never forget.  

"This was a night for every St. Thomas swimmer who ever trained and competed in O’Shaughnessy pool.  You could feel the memories drifting up out of the corners, and down from the ceiling beams."  

The Tommie men and women compete Saturday at the St. John's Invite.
