Sat. Night MIAC Swim: GAC men, SO women win
February 23, 2003After three years away, the women's championship trophy in MIAC women's swimming & diving will return to the St. Olaf campus.
The Oles (764.5) edged crosstown rival Carleton (755.5) by a mere nine points and topped defending champion Gustvaus (737) by 27.5 points. St. Olaf had won 11 women's team championships in row from 1987-97 and also won in 1999. The Oles trailed late in the meet but outscored Carleton 36-0 in diving with a 6-7-8 finish.
Macalester (301), St. Thomas (233), Concordia (219), St. Ben's (218), Hamline (212), St. Catherine (118) and St. Mary's 979) rounded out the team scoring.
On the men's side, Gustavus repeated as team champion. The Gusties (860), St. John's (678.5) and St. Olaf (648.5) claimed the top three spots. St. John's moved up one spot after it placed third for four consecutive years.
Carleton (398), St. Thomas (267), Macalester (233), St. Mary's (229) and Hamline (131) finished fourth through eighth.
Carleton junior phenom Marie Marsman added an NCAA Division III record to her five meet and all-time MIAC records she set during the three-day meet. In Saturday's finals of the 100 freestyle, Marsman became the first Division III woman to break 50 seconds from a flat start. Her time of 49.73 bettered her prelim time of 50.20 recorded earlier in the day. That beat her old record of 50.21 from the 2002 MIAC Championships.
Marsman had a hand in seven victories, two more than in 2002, and she was named the MIAC women's Swimmer of the Year. She also anchored the Knights' winning 400 free relay to close the meet Saturday. Emily Monloh, Andrea Barbera, Brittz Veitenheimer and Marsman clocked an NCAA automatic time of 3:21.20.
Marsman earlier set meet/MIAC all-time records in the 50 free, 100 butterfly and on the Knights' 400 medley and 800 free relays.
St. Olaf's Carly Knoell (2:07/37) and Carleton's Jenny Graver (2:07.66) finished 1-2 in the 200 backstroke and both broke the old meet and all-time MIAC record. Knoell's time also surpassed the NCAA automatic standard.
The other St. Olaf women's winner was Anna Guenther in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.23). St. Ben's had a champion in one-meter diving as Amanda Kelly scored 361.35. The other Saurday women's winner was Carleton's Elise Knoche in the 1,650 free (17:51.78).
The men's Swimmer of the Year for the second year in a row is Carleton's Jason Brown, who won the 100 free in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 45.66.
The Women's Coach of the Year is Macalester's Bob Pearson, while the Men's Coach of the Year is SJU's Bill Saxton.
The Divers of the Year are Emily Hall of Concordia and Charlie Kimball of Gustavus.
SJU freshman Luke Prokup qualified for nationals in the 200 breaststroke. His winning time of 2:04.78 broke a seven-year-old meet record and was .01 of a second under the automatic cutoff.
Other Saturday night men's winners were St. Thomas sophomore Dave Linn, who won the 200 back (1:53.11) and swept the 100 and 200 back for the second year in a row; St. Olaf's Marc Glineberg in the 1,650 free (16:27.42); GAC's Scott Stephens in the 200 fly (1:58.16); and the St. John's 400 free relay team of Luke Vestrum, David Williams, Kerry O'Neill and Jim Arnold (3:07.69).
