Good start for Tommie swim teams

St. Thomas had several good performances in the season-opening St. Thomas Relays Saturday in a non-team scored competition at the College of St. Catherine pool.

UST sophomore Cathleen Daly of Redmond, Wash., clocked 1:10.2 on the breaststroke leg of the 400 Medley Relay, only a second off her personal record which she set last last year going all-conference. Daly was four seconds faster than her relay time from the same meet in 2003. Daly also swam well on the 200 Mixed Medley, helping the Tommies to their highest finish in years in that event.

On the men's side, freshman T.J. Hardy of Chaska anchored the 400 Medley Relay home in 49.8, as the Tommie men held onto third place in that relay. Hardy also clocked 56.8 on the 300 Back Relay, which also placed third. Hardy is within a couple of seconds of his lifetime bests, even this early in the season.

UST's 200 Mixed Medley was also impressive with senior Dave Linn (Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette), Daly, Kate Boran (Brainerd) and Kevin Mullee (Madison, Wis./Memorial) on the A team taking second and the B Relay taking fourth with Hardy, Dave Turnbloom (Hibbing), Kate Flack (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and Heather McFarlane (Sauk City, Wis.). UST also took third in both the women's and men's 400 medley relays with
Linn, Turnbloom, Kevin Mullee and Hardy for the men and Jacinta Krych (Holdingford), Daly, Boran and McFarlane for the women.

The men's 300 backstroke relay was strong with Jon Soldner(Marquette, Mich.), Tim Mullee Hardy and Linn).

UST hosts Carleton Friday (6 p.m.) at O'Shaughnessy Pool in the first dual meet of 2004-2005.
