Men's Swimming wins six events at SMU Invite

St. Thomas swimmers set four pool or meet records in Saturday's non-scored St. Mary's Invite in Winona. Eight women's teams and five men's teams were in the competition.

For the men, St. Thomas senior Dave Linn had a hand in four firsts, and freshman T.J. Hardy also had three strong swims.

Linn, a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American from Shorewood, Wis., won the 100 backstroke (54.71), the 50 free (22.37), the 200 back (2:04.63) and was on the winning 200 medley relay in a meet and pool record 1:41.72. He was joined on that relay was Dave Turnbloom, Kevin Mullee and Tim Mullee.

Hardy set a meet record as he won the 100 free (49.91). He also placed second in the 50 free (22.61) and 100 back (58.03). His 50 free time also broke the previous meet record.

Turnbloom won the 100 breaststroke (66.53) and Kevin Mullee won the 200 fly (2:11.69). Turnbloom also took second in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.05).

Thirds were scored by Tim Mullee in the 100 back (58.92), and the Toms' 200 free relay with Matt DesMarais, Paul Stahler, Adam Groebner and Chris Scrabeck (1:47.40). Fourths were tallied by Tim Mullee in the 50 free (23.34); Kevin Mullee in the 100 free (51.27); and Des Marais in the 1,650 free (19:25.72) and 200 free (2:02.27). Fifths were scored by Groebner in the 1,650 free (21:12.42); and Jon Soldner in the 200 backstroke (2:18.99). Sixths were scored by Stahler in the 1,650 free (21:28.64); Groebner in the 500 free (6:04.81); and Soldner in the 100 back (65.37).

For the women, Cathleen Daly (SO-Redmond, Wash.) had a hand in three victories. The sophomore swam on the winning 200 medley relay with Krysy Harrod, Kate Boran and Heather McFarlane that broke a meet and pool record in 1:55.57. Daly also won the 100 and 200 breaststroke (1:09.06 and 2:33.04) and took third in the 400 IM (5:09.82).

McFarlane took second in the 50 free (25.95) and 100 free (56.36). Boran was second in the 200 fly (2:26.58). Ann Hepola was third in the 1,650 free (19:58.11) and the 500 free (5:43.76). Harrod was third in the 100 fly (64.81), fifth in the 100 back (66.46) and sixth in the 200 back (2:26.89). UST took fifth in the 200 free relay with Kate Flack, Tara Anderson, Hepola and Jacinta Krych (1:51.88). Flack also took fifth in the 500 free (5:54.49) and the 200 free (2:07.67). Kim Smith took fifth in the 200 fly (2:35.04).

St. Thomas will host dual mets vs. St. Ben's and St. John's this Saturday at 1 p.m. in O'Shaughnessy Pool.
