Friday MIAC Men's Swim: Linn takes third

Friday Finals

Senior Dave Linn took third in the 100 backstroke finals (52.91) Friday night to lead the St. Thomas men at the MIAC Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota's Aquatic Center.

The three-day meet concludes Saturday with 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. sessions.

Gustavus (555) leads St. Olaf (529) atop the standings followed by St. John's (410.5), Carleton (250), UST (186), Macalester (162), Hamline (134.5) and St. Mary's (95).

Linn also joined Dave Turnbloom, Kevin Mullee and T.J. Hardy on the fifth-place 200 medley relay in 1:37.22. That broke a two-year-old school record of 1:37.70.

In the 100 fly, freshman Kevin Mullee took seventh (52.66). In one-meter diving, Rob Erickson was eighth(103.55 points).

Joining Linn in scoring in the 100 back were Hardy, 11th(54.77) and Tim Mullee, 16th (59.10). Turnbloom was 12th in the 100 breaststroke (64.17). Matt Des Marais was 14th in the 200 free (1:54.25). The 800 free relay team of Tim Mullee, Des Marais, Hank Kemp and Tyler Ormson was sixth in 7:50.78.

Friday Prelims
The St. Thomas men's team had three swimmers make the finals and four make the consolation finals in the opening session Friday at the MIAC Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota's Aquatic Center. The evening session begins at 6:30 p.m.

Senior Dave Linn took third in the 100 backstroke prelims (53.11) to reach the eight-man finals. In the 100 fly, freshman Kevin Mullee took seventh (52.91) to advance to the finals. And in one-meter diving, Rob Erickson was eighth of 14 (114.75 points) to reach the finals.

Four Toms made the consolation finals by placing ninth through 16th in the prelims -- Dave Turnbloom, 12th in the 100 breaststroke (63.74); T.J. Hardy, 10th in the 100 back (54.58); Tiim Mullee, 16th in the 100 back (57.07); and Matt Des Marais, 14th in the 200 free (1:54.43).

Four other Toms had top-20 finishes but missed advancing. Hank kemp was 20th in the 400 IM (5:05.51). Paul Stahler was 18th (2:06.00) and Adam Groebner was 19th (2:07.39) in the 200 freestyle; and Chris Scrabeck was 18th in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.92).

Also on Friday night, finals will be held in the 800 freestyle and 200 medley relay for men and women.
