T.J. Hardy is MIAC champ in 50 freestyle

St. Thomas senior T.J. Hardy won the 50 freestyle in Thursday night's finals of the MIAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championships at the U of M Gopher Aquatic Center.

Hardy's 20.97 clocking edged St. Olaf's Jake Koch (20.99) foir the victory. Hardy had broke his own schol record earleir in the day with a 20.94 time that broke his 2007 school record of 21.13 set in a third-place race at the MIAC meet.

Hardy also led off the second-place 200 free relay in 1:24.68 with Tim Mullee, Mitchell Johnson and Kevin Mullee.

In the 400 medley relay, UST placed fifth in 3:35.98 with Matthew Moore, Nick Frost, Kevin Mullee and Johnson.

UST sits in fourth place out of eight teams after the first of three days. Gustavus (230) and St. Olaf (208) are in a tight battle for first. Carleton (154), St. Thomas (144), St. John's (89), Hamline (84), Macalester (80) and St. Mary's (78) hold the next six spots.

Also in the 50 free, Kevin Mullee took eighth  (21.97) in the finals. In the consolation 50 (9th through 16th place), Tim Mullee was first (21.90) and Nick Frost was eighth (22.55).

In one-meter diving, Jeremy Anderson took fifth in 306.75 and Andre Peterson was 11th.

In the 500 free finals, Andrew Spratt was eighth in 4:53.68. In the consolations, Johnson took 13th (4:54.85) and Teddy Paterson was 14th (4:55.93).

In the 200 IM consolations, Moore placed 14th (2:01.38).

Thursday Prelim Round

Senior T.J. Hardy broke his own school record in the 50 freestyle in Friday's preliminary round of the MIAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championships at the U of M Gopher Aquatic Center.

Hardy's 20.94 was the fastest prelim time and seeds him first for Thursday night's finals. He his 2007 record of 21.13 set in a third-place race at the MIAC meet.

Kevin Mullee was fifth in the 50 free (21.61) and also made the eight-man finals for tonight. Tim Mullee (12th, 22.13) and Nick Frost (14th, 22.19) made the consolation finals in the 50 free.

In one-meter diving prelims, Jeremy Anderson took sixth in 306.75 and will compete in tonight's finals.

In the 500 free prelims, Andrew Spratt was eighth in 4:50.42 to make tonight's finals. Mitchell Johnson took 12th (4:54.90) and Teddy Paterson was 13th (4:56.04) and both will compete in the consolation finals.

In the 200 IM prelims, Matthew Moore (16th, 2:02.42) made tonight's consolation finals.
