The 2008-09 season will be Tom Hodgson's 30th as head coach of the men's and women's swimming teams at St. Thomas. During that period, he has coached more than 40 All-Americans and more than 54 conference champions.
The men’s and women’s swimming teams share a unique camaraderie that arises from shared workouts, competing in many of the same meets and supporting each other in the pool and around campus. It's no accident that since 1981, they proudly call themselves "The Family."
The team has a campus-wide reputation for its community service and charity projects and have twice earned national recognition in recent seasons by the National Association of College Athletic Directors.
Academic excellence is also a hallmark of St. Thomas Swimming and Diving. Since 2002, the Tommies have had two CoSIDA Academic All-Americans (Dave Linn and Kristen Murray), along with many MIAC Academic All Americans. In addition, the Tommie team regularly has earned Academic All-American honors by a national coaches' association.
Team members train in the O’Shaughnessy Hall pool; divers use the boards at one the neighboring Colleges. The team takes a Christmas training trip to Ft. Myers, Florida every season. Most dual meets are within Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The 2007 and 2008 seasons marked a dramatic upturn for the St. Thomas Men's team, and 2009 looks to be every bit as good. The team size is limited by the size of the pool, given the number of swimmers the team is able to accomodate in its two afternoon practices with the women. Tryouts are held during the first week of practice, but our team's philosophy is to welcome all that we can reasonably handle.
