Men's Tennis gets ITA Academic honors

St. Thomas had its men's and women's tennis teams and 10 individuals receive academic honors for 2004-05 from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
On the men's side, Coach Terry Peck's team had a grade-point average of 3.42 to finish among two MIAC squads and 27 Division III teams on the ITA All-Academic Team. The Tommies had seven of the 18 male honorees from the MIAC on the ITA Scholar-Athlete Teams with grade-point averages of 3.50 or better for the 2004-05 year -- Tut Fuller (SR-Dubuque, Iowa), Brian Thomas (SR-Winona), Tom Loper (SR-Eden Prairie), Grant Campbell (JR-Dubuque, Iowa), Kevin Manzel (FR-Dubuque, Iowa), Adam Berland (SR-Decorah, Iowa) and Adam Janzen (FR-Aitkin). Fuller, Thomas and Loper all made All-MIAC at Nos. 1, 2 and 4 singles. Fuller, who graduated in May with a 3.99 gpa and is headed for medical school, also was named to trhe ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Team. The UST men had a 16-4 dual-meet record and took third in the conference standings after two close losses to runner-up Carleton.
On the women's side, UST was among six conference teams and 49 overall Division III squads honored on the ITA Academic Team with a team gpa of 3.26 for last school year. UST also had three women honored as ITA Scholar-Athletes with gpas of 3.50 or higher for last school year -- Cortney Dirks (SO-St. Peter), Tiffany Banken (SO-Elk River) and Carolyn Tibbetts (FR-Stillwater). The Tommie women closed the 2005 dual season 16-3 and placed third in the MIAC standings.
