Strong college tennis debut for UST freshman

Tommie freshman Arya Vayghan had an impressive collegiate debut as he went 4-1 in the ITA Tennis singles competition this weekend in St. Peter. A field of 128 players from Minneosta, Iowa and Wisconsin universities competed in singles play.

The fifth-seed Vayghan lost a close match in Sunday's semifinals to Gustie All-American and top-seed Andy Bryan, the eventual champion.

In doubles, the UST team of Ben Herding and Josh Tomashek went 3-1 on Friday and Saturday. The duo beat teams from Macalester, St. John's and Luther but lost 8-6 in the quarterfinals to Dave Koppel and Aaron Zenner of Gustavus.

St. Thomas will start its 2008 season in February.
