Former Tommie sprinter Roman Cress had his moment in the sun Thursday at the Beijing Olympics.
Cress ran the 100-meter dash prelims for his homeland, The Marshall Islands. Cress didn't advance to the next round as he clocked a time of 11.18. It was well over Cress' personal best of 10.39 set years ago but not unexpected. Cress had retired from competitive running and had a only couple of months to train after learning that the Marshall Islands would send him to Beijing.
Cress ran one lane over from former world-record holder and medal favorite Asafa Powell of Jamaica. His heat was shown nationwide on tape-delay by NBC late Friday morning as the network featured all the 100-meter medal favorites' first races.
Cress, an NCAA runner-up and nine-time conference champ in relays and sprint races for the Tommies nearly 10 years ago, was also profiled late Thursday night on KARE-11's newcast by Eric Perkins, including footage shot as a recent training sessions at St. Thomas.
