St. Thomas shattered a school record and placed a close third out of 17 teams in Friday morning's 4x800 relay at the Drake Relays in Des Moines.
The UST quarter of freshman Mike Hutton and seniors Kyle Brandon, Matt Boumeester and Brian Sames ran 7:31.38 -- just one second behind winner Oklahoma City Christian and .38 of a second behind runner-up UW-Stevens Point. Hutton helped UST breakout of the pack early as he led off in 1:52 and gave the Tommies the lead.
UST also took third in this event at Drake in 2008 but with a 7:39 clocking. Friday's time broke a two-year old UST school record by nearly five seconds. Neil Atzinger joined Brandon, Boumeester and Sames on that relay.
UST also ran the 4x100 on Friday morning and qualified for Saturday's eight-team finals in 41.77. Chris Bradford, Phil Bastron, Sam Moen and James Ewer will look to improve on their season best of 41.30.
UST also made the eight-team finals in the 4x400 relay. The Tommies qualified eighth -- fourth among Division III schools -- in 3:16.42 with Joe DeFrance, Bastron, Ewer and Jager.
