St. Thomas had a Division III-best nine men named to the 2008 United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) Division III All-Academic Track and Field Team.

The Tommies also received the USTFCCCA team academic honor and ranked 13th overall with a 3.262 team grade-point average.

The nine individual honorees are the most of any Division III institution. In all, 155 men were honored in Division III, including 12 from the MIAC.

St. Thomas and UW-LaCrosse shared the national distinction of having the most male and female track and field athletes honored with 19 each.

The elite honor team is comprised of student-athletes who qualified for nationals automatically or provisionally and who have a 3.25 or higher cumulative grade-point average.

Honorees from Coach Steve Mathre's Tommie team are seniors Mark O'Connell, P.J. Theisen and Neil Atzinger; juniors James Ewer, Pat Jager, JoeDeFrance, Kyle Brandon and Phil Baston; and sophomores Sam Moen. Previously, Theisen made CoSIDA Academic All-America and was a two-time All-American outdoors. McConnell was the NCAA champ in the hammer, and Ewer was an All-American in the indoor long jump.

The Tommie men placed fifth at the NCAA outdoor meet and swept the conference team championships in indoor track and outdoor track.
