St. Thomas' Tim Springfield was chosen as 2009 National Assistant Coach of the Year for men's track and field. The award was announced Tuesday by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA).
In his 12th year at St. Thomas, assistant coach Springfield led the Tommies’ middle distance crew to new
heights in 2009. Springfield-coached student-athletes broke four school records, earned three indoor track & field All-American honors, two NCAA outdoor All-America honors, achieved seven NCAA provisional or automatic qualifying marks, and scored 93 points at the MIAC championships during the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons.
Springfield also helped UST athletes post three top-three finishes at the Drake Relays, including the conference's first relay win at Drake in 77 years (women's distance medley). He's also helped that same distance-medley quartet to NCAA indoor runner-up placings in 2008 and 2009.
He assisted women's cross country coach Joe Sweeney on the Toms' conference champion and 14th-place NCAA finisher. He helped the Tommie women take 12th in the nation indoors, and aided the UST's men's third-place NCAA finish outdoors.
Springfield was a Division I All-American cross country runner at Virginia. Springfield competed internationally for the USA junior national track team, and later in his career he set track personal bests of 3:50 for 1500 meters, 13:50 for 5000 meters, and 29:10 for 10,000 meters.
He earned a graduate degree at the University of Wisconsin, where he was an assistant coach for two NCAA champion cross country teams in five seasons with the Badgers.
