Friday NCAA track--Arnes third in high jump

St. Thomas junior Katie Arnes tied for third place in the high jump Friday at the NCAA Division III track and field championships in Naperville, Ill. Arnes leaped 5-5 3-4 and earned 4.5 team points.

Going into Saturday's final day of the three-day competition, UST had 4.5 points and is in 31st place among women with two athletes in Saturday's finals -- Kara Hedin in the triple jump and Katie Bestul in the 100 hurdles.

On the men's side, the Toms have yet to score but have two relays (4x100 and 4x400) and three individuals (Roman Cress, 100; Ryan Kollmann, 1,500; and Craig Benson, 110 hurdles) in Saturday's finals. Senior Greg Kaiser, seeded third in the javelin, will miss the meet with an ankle injury.

Friday, Cress ran 10.82 and qualified with the seventh fastest time for today's eight-man finals in the 100 meters. Teammate Jeremy Heckman ran 11.05 and missed the finals.

Benson, just a freshman, ran 14.79 for the seventh-best time in Friday's prelims and made the eight-man 110-meter hurdles finals.

Junior Dan Draine placed 12th in the 3000 steeplechase in 9:14.45.

On the women's side, Bestul ran 14.85 and qualified eighth in the 100 hurdles. Teammate Emily Menden ran 15.21 and missed the finals. And freshman Jill Ylonen ran 12.86 and missed the finals in the 100 meters.
