School record, 3 NCAA provisionals for men's track

St. Thomas took second out of four teams in Saturday's MIAC-WIAC Challenge indoor track and field meet hosted in Collegeville by St. John's. On the weekend, the Toms had three NCAA provisional qualifying marks for next month's NCAA Indoor Championships and also set a school record in the 4x400 relay.
In the state scoring, the two Wisconsin teams tallied 111.5 to edge Minnesota's pair 83.5. In the four-team scoring, UW-Eau Claire scored 192 for first followed by
St. Thomas (157), St. John's (151.5) and UW-Stout (139.5).
The Toms had seven event winners. They won the 4x200 relay (1:29.18); Jeremy Heckman won the 400 (49.19) in an NCAA provisional qualifying time; Mike Gruba won the mile (4:07.13); Andrew Hilliard tied for first in the 600 (1:23.03); Levi Severson won the 3,000 (8:49.02); Andrew Kiselius won the long jump; and Joe McCarney won the high jump.
Justin Hall was disqualified in the 400 for stepping on a line while running what turned out to be an NCAA provisional time.
In Friday's Snowshoe Open, the Toms had two NCAA provisional marks -- Gruba ran 1:54.10 in the 800, and the 4x400 set a school indoor record and clocked 3:20.07 with Hilliard, Heckman, Mark Bates and Hall.
