Hilliard wins hurdles at UST men's track invite

Sophomore Andrew Hilliard ran 54.10 to win the 400-meter intermediate hurdles and highlight the Tommies' men's performances at Saturday's non-team scored St. Thomas Invitational track and field meet at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.

The competition, the first outdoors in 2001 for the Tommie men, was held despite steady winds of 30-40 mph and periodic rain.

Hilliard also was fourth in the long jump (21-6 1-4).

The Toms had three runner-up performances -- the 4x100 relay team ran 42.28 to take second behind Division II North Dakota State; Nick Maddox and Brian Preus took 2-3 in the 5,000 in 15:37 and 15:40, respectively; and Mike Gruba was second in the 800 meters (1:57.05).

Justin Hall was fourth in the 400 (49.49); Chris Milton was third in the pole vault (14-8 1-4); Mark Bates was fifth in the 200 (23.06) and fifth in the 40 hurdles (56.36); Ben Garbe was fifth in the triple jump (44-2 3-4); Dan Slater was fifth in the javelin (150-5); Parker Gunderson was sixth in the 110 hurdles (15.21); Andrew Kisielius was seventh in the triple jump (43-7 3-4); Tom Hart was seventh in the 100 (11.32); and Aaron Johnson was fourth in the discus (123-6), sixth in the hammer (145-3) and eighth in the shot put (43-5 1-4).
