Good start for UST men at MIAC track

The St. Thomas men had a good opening day at the 2001 MIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Carleton College. The Toms, gunning for their 17th team championship in 19 years, have 57 points to lead Gustavus and St. Olaf (45), Concordia (39), St. John's (31) and Hamline (22).

The Toms also qualified several athletes for Saturday's finals.

UST had one winner Friday -- Chris Milton won the pole vault (15-3 1-2). The Toms scored 17 points in the 10,000 meters with Levi Severson (second in NCAA provisional time of 31:50.88), Nick Maddox (third, 31:55.87) and Brian Preus (sixth, 32:04.10). Aaron Johnson scored 11 points with a fourth in the hammer (148-1) and a third in the discus (151-7). Andrew Kisielius was fourth in the long jump (22-2 1-2). UST also took sixth in the 4x800 relay. The Toms also got eight points in last week's decathlon from runner-up Joe McCarney.

Also in Friday's prelims, Andrew Hilliard had an NCAA provisional time in the 400 hurdles in 53.82.
